About GSNV

The Genetic Support Network Victoria (GSNV) is a vibrant and active organisation committed to promoting the interests and well-being of people affected by genetic and rare conditions in Victoria. The role of GSNV is to facilitate a fully supportive, ongoing, and enduring relationship with families and individuals who are having investigations into a genetic diagnosis, or who have had a genetic diagnosis.

GSNV developed and implemented an evidence-based biology resource to support teachers with teaching genomics information (Genomics in Schools). Following strong endorsement, this was developed into the Science Within Us program, a digital learning resource exploring our genetic identity.

Australian Genomics is a national collaboration supporting the translation of genomic research into clinical practice. The organisation coordinates, conducts, and enables genomic research through a national network of more than 100 partners and collaborators across all states and territories. The Science Within Us resource has been funded by Australian Genomics, through the Australian Genomics Implementation Grant.

FAQs

Our website serves as a digital platform for students and their educators to explore concepts around genetic identity. The resource provides interactive tools and educational materials to enhance learning about genetics in line with the Australian Curriculum, and it brings to life this complex subject by engaging students through the real-world stories of Australian families living with genetic conditions.

Our resources cover a wide range of topics including basic genetics, genetic identity, social and ethical issues in genetics, and stories of individuals with genetic conditions. The content is tailored to different age groups ranging from 10 to 18 years old.

The website is designed for use in a classroom setting under the guidance of educators. Parents and carers and members of the community who wish to familiarize themselves with the content, can browse through the lesson outlines found in our demonstration format. Only registered teachers in Australia can set up a free account, which grants access to all platform features, including class registration.

Yes, our resources are designed to be adaptable for both upper primary and secondary school students, with content tailored to different educational levels.

Once registered, teachers can log in to their account and generate unique codes for their students within their dashboard. There is no limit to the number of classes a teacher can register within their user account. These codes are designed to be distributed to students by their educator, allowing them to access the platform and complete their work. No personal data is held by The Science Within Us relating to students. Teachers are able to easily download the student codes within a CVS file to store within their own servers/systems.

These are the steps to manage students and follow their progress within the class:

  • Creating Classes: Once registered, teachers can log in and create unlimited classes in their dashboard.
  • Adding Students: Assign the number of students participating in each class and the website generates unique access codes for each student.
  • New Students: Add new students anytime and generate new codes as needed.
  • Distributing Codes: Manually distribute codes to students for platform access.
  • Downloading Codes: Download student codes as a CSV file to track their progress.
  • Tracking Progress: Track each student’s progress using their unique code.

Yes, teachers can monitor their students’ progress and completed work through the teacher dashboard. This is a feature of the teacher registration and helps in providing timely feedback and support.
